Park photo charge dropped
Amateur photographers will not have to pay to take wedding photographs in the city’s parks.
The Christchurch City Council last evening overturned an earlier recommendation to charge $5O for noncommercial groups using the park as a backdrop for photographs. The chairman of the parks and recreation committee, which proposed the charges, Cr Clive Cotton, said the charge was intended to cover the semiprofessional or part-time photographer.
However, as it could result in amateur photographers being charged he recommended it be dropped, he said.
The charges were introduced to generate revenue from the city’s assets. It was felt professional photographers were making extensive use of the reserves for commercial purposes and should pay for the privilege. The charges to hold wedding ceremonies in the parks and for commercial photography remain.
