No grant for boxing body
The Christchurch City Council struck a blow against boxing yesterday.
A plea for financial assistance from the Canterbury Boxing Association, which was having temporary financial difficulties, was refused by the council.
The grants committee had recommended $5OO be given to the associa-
tion, but Cr David Close said he could not support what he considered to be a “barbaric” sport.
The council should not be seen to support a sport
where the object of the game was to hit another person, he said.
“It horrifies me the way we justify this sort of thing as sport,” he said. The recommendation for the grant was deflated by 12 votes to seven.
