Fence plea rejected
A couple seeking an exemption from fencing their swimming pool have been turned down by the Riccarton Borough Council.
Brian and Barbara Molloy, of Riccarton, told the council they should be exempt from the Swimming Pools Act because their property was
securely fenced and they had no young children. At yesterday’s finance committee meeting Cr Derek Anderson said there were some cases where exemptions could be granted, such as when pools were well-secured
at the rear of a property. But the Molloy’s pool was at the front of their property, and a child could wander in from the street, he said.
The Mayor, Mr Richard Harrington, said keeping front gates shut was not a sufficient guarantee of safety.
A child had drowned last year in a swimming pool at the front of a Harakeke Street property even though the gates were kept shut, he said. The child went into the property while the owners were out.
