Pupils to meet yacht’s crew

Two crew members of a British yacht retracing Captain Cook’s 1768 voyage round the world will speak to pupils at Halswell School, tomorrow. Mr John Paul, the master of the 13.7 m steel yacht Ambition II and Miss Julie Nichol, are making the trip from Auckland, where their yacht is berthed. The trip has been organised by Mr David Oakes, whose son, Rhyan, is in Standard 6 at the school.

Mr Oakes, a travel agent, was in Tahiti in

May when he met the crew of the yacht on a beach and found they were writing to his son’s class.

Halswell is one of several schools round the world keeping track of the yacht’s voyage, through letters and copies of the yacht’s log. The brother of Rhyan Oakes’ teacher at Halswell School sailed with Mr Paul in Britain. The Ambition II sailed from Whitby, Britain, in September last year, and will compete her voyage at Botany Bay, Australia.
