Option on land for museum
PA Wellington The Government signed an agreement yesterday to buy the site for the new National Museum on the Wellington waterfront. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr Bassett, paid a nominal $1 fee to the Wellington Harbour Board to secure an option to buy the 2 ha site for $2O million by 1990. Dr Bassett said the agreement was an exciting first step towards what would be “the most significant new building to be built in this country, in the last quarter of this century.” The foundation stone for the new museum would be laid in 1990, but the building was not expected to be finished until 1996.
