Welfare pays $500,000
PA Gisborne The Social Welfare Department has paid more than $500,000 to victims of the floods in the Gisborne region. The figure was given by the department’s Gisborne director, Mr Barry’ Smart, at a special flood debriefing. Earlier the figure had been estimated at $240,000. Mr Smart said the department had approved more than 2000 applications for assistance and
paid more than $500,000 in the last three days. Help was on the way for an estimated 200 landholders or self-em-ployed people in the region, Mr Smart said. He said people such as farmers, . horticulturists and the selfemployed were eligible for loss of livelihood assistance from the department. He agreed there had been some confusion over eligibility’ of landholders for help.
