PA Auckland An Auckland yachtsman, Albie Bergin, in Alstar was last evening safely sheltered in harbour, ' planning to head back out into the worst Cyclone Bola can throw at him.
After battling for days through hurricane-force winds and waves the
height of houses, the veteran of the Transfield Tasman ’’ challenge took cover in the relative calm of Whangaroa Harbour yesterday. But he told coastal radio operators, “I’m) in the lead and I’m going to finish the race.” The Australian, aged 171, known as i the Captain Bligh of yachting, refused
hospital treatment for three broken (ribs suffered when his cutter fell off a huge wave several days ago. He declined any help in making repairs to his yacht because it would have disqualified him from the Sydney-to-Auck-landirace. Boats that have not finished the race are heading foir shelter.
