Dr Michael Volkerling, director of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council since 1977, will join the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery and the National Museum as executive director. He expects to take up his appointment in June. Dr Volkerling’s new job will entail creating an integrated management structure for the two institutions and preparing for their transition to the new Museum of New Zealand centre planned for the Wellington waterfront.
“While I am looking forward to the challenge of my new position, I will not be leaving the Arts Council without regrets," he said.
“It has been a productive time for me both personally and professionally and I will certainly miss the stimulating environment of the council.”
Before being appointed director for the Arts Council, Dr Volkerling, aged 40, worked for the council as senior advisory officer for 18 months and acting director for six
months. j During his period of service, the council passed through a phase of structural change. Three regional councils, about 100 community arts councils and the Council for Maori and South Pacific Arts were established. .
The council’s funding and service programmes were also expanded considerably and its policies reshaped. Applications for the position of director will be sought at the end of this month.
