Birdwatcher education centre proposed

PA Hamilton The growing reputation of Hauraki Gulf’s Miranda mudflats as a birdwatchers’ paradise has prompted plans to build a $500,000 education centre there. The Miranda Naturalist Trust chairman, Mr Stuart Chambers, said the area drew more tourists each year as it featured in overseas birdwatcher magazines. The trust bought a lha site after the Queen Elizabeth II Trust save $lO,OOO. It promised another $lO,OOO towards building costs but the trust had so far raised only $40,000 of the $500,000 needed, Mr Chambers said.

The trust hoped a big fund-raising drive would finance the centre in time for two important birdwatching conferences in 1990.
