Whaling ballot

PA Wellington The International Whaling Commission’s first postal ballot has passed a resolution urging the Japanese to stop whaaling. The commission’s chairman, Mr lan Stewart, said the results of the ballot were 19 countries in favour, six against and two abstentions. Six countries did not vote.

The resolution was proposed by Britain over plans by the Japanese to catch 300 southern ocean Minke whales — a revised plan on their original proposal early last year to catch more than 800 whales.
