Sixty years of cadets
PA Wellington Sixty years of St John cadets were celebrated recently with a presentation to the founder of the movement, Mr Ted Gilberd, of Stokes Valley, Wellington. He began the New Zealand St John Cadets in Wanganui in 1927 after hearing that cadets had been established in Britain. In the first year the number of cadets rose from 25 to about 60, Mr Gilberd said. There are now more than 250 cadet units throughout New Zealand. Mr Gilberd, who still attends the cadets’ national competitions each year, was given a photograph album of the sixtieth anniversary festival for cadets held last year in Feilding. >
