Christchurch gardeners using ‘innovative’ designs

Christchurch gardeners are adopting innovative and unusual designs, says the convener of the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s summer garden competitions committee, Mr Ron Proctor. ‘‘Judging proved to be a stimulating exercise with many gardeners adopting innovative and unusual designs,” he said. “This was allied with a choice of plants considered to be difficult to

grow in our climate, but found flourishing in micro-climates such as under the eaves of houses. “A pleasing feature also this year was the general improvement in the standard of lawns — the perfect foil for flowers. The lawn at 141 Belfast Road was outstanding. - “The premier garden, at 3 Purau Terrace, is the ideal combination of good design and well balanced

plantings, all in perfect conditions because of skilled cultivation. “A disturbing aspect was reduced entries in factory gardens, not because of a lack of interest but because of the depressed state of the economy. We look forward to changing conditions making it possible for these gardens once again to make their contribution to the beauty of our Garden City,” Mr Proctor said.
