Eight beach rescues
Eight swimmers were rescued by volunteer lifeguards on Canterbury’s crowded beaches yesterday. Six were pulled from the surf at Sumner and two from Waimairi Beach. The publicity officer for the Canterbury Surf Lifesaving Association, Mr John Monck, said lifeguards had asked many
people to swim between flags. People, he said, were very obliging. Conditions were generally safe, with the tide coming in from midmorning. The end of the school holidays marks the end of surf patrols from Monday to Friday. Volunteers will continue week-end beach patrols.
