Forces redeployment ‘not an abandonment’
PA Wellington The redeployment of New Zealand’s Armed Forces from South-East Asia was not an abandonment of its responsibilities in the region, said the Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard, during his tour of South East Asia. The recall of its troops from Singapore, due to begin next year, recog-
nised a. redirection of defence focusing in the Pacific region, he said. Mr Tizard said New Zealand remained fully committed to the fivePower defence arrangements with Britain, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. New Zealand announced the withdrawal from Singapore last year.
