Keen bidding for angoras

Bidding for the 180 goats at the tenth premier South Island angora sale at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday was brisk, but no records were set. The large gallery appreciated the quality does and bucks presented and competitive bidding for the best rose in leaps of $5OO. Only 31 per cent were passed at auction and some sales were completed later. Auctioneers described the over-all quality as an improvement on last year with the best of the South Island stock, including several Royal Show winners, going at realistic prices. Mr David Cassells, the stud and bloodstock manager for Pyne, Gould, Guinness International, said that although the prices paid did not reach the dizzying heights recorded in previous years they were in line with recent North Island and South Island sales and the market displayed confidence. Sixty-two does were sold at auction for a total of more than $40,000 and an average price of $647 each. The offering included 59 two-tooth does which sold-at an average of $605 compared with an average of $1270 last year. However, the average price paid for angora twotooths at Landcorp’s recent Waitangi angora sale was $665. The top price paid for a two-tooth doe yesterday was $2200 compared with $6OOO at last year’s sale. At the Waitangi sale, $2200 was also the top two-tooth doe price. The top price of the day of $4BOO went to a mixed-age buck from Taegar Partnership Angoras, of Culverden. The buck was bought by Okaruru Angoras, of Akaroa. A two-tooth buck from the Faulkner’s Cora Lynn Angora Stud, Springfield, took the second highest bid at $4500 and the buyers, the Gould’s of Marlow Angoras, Amberley, received the gallery’s applause for their determined bidding. The large yarding of twotooth bucks was a feature of the sale" and the total bids rose to $56,850 with an average price of $916 compared with $1498 last year.

More than 142 registered buyers were recorded for the sale and most sales went to South Island buyers. The only bid above $3OOO to go to the North Island was for a twotooth buck from P. and F.
