Bid for $36M contra aid

NZPA-Reuter Washington President Reagan’s new contra-aid package faces stiff opposition in Congress despite its sharply scaled-back size and there are signs the White House may compromise further in a bid to win next week’s key vote. Mr Reagan, who unveiled the package to lawmakers yesterday, was to formally submit his contra-aid request to Congress today and planned later to deliver a strong appeal for its approval in a speech to a conservative defence lobby.

The House of Representatives Republican leader, Robert Michel, of Illinois, told reporters that the President would seek $U536.25 million in mostly non-lethal aid over four months for the rebels who are fighting Nicaragua’s Leftist Sandinista Government. Mr Michel said 8U53.6 million would be for military aid but it would be held in escrow until the end of March and only released if Mr Reagan certified that efforts to arrange a ceasefire between the contras and the Sandinistas had failed.
