Air strike saves Angolan town

NZPA-Reuter Luanda A big air strike by Angolan and Cuban pilots has saved the strategic garrison town of Cuito Cuanavale from capture by an invading South African force, according to Angolan military sources. A Defence Ministry spokesman, Major Karlos Dias, said Angola’s Armed Forces were now strengthening their positions in and around the south-east town, which has been under seige by the 6000-strong South

African force for two weeks. Major Dias denied a claim by South Africanbacked UNITA rebels that Government forces had fled from Cuito Cuanavale, the main staging point for Government operations in Cuando Cubango province. Cuban pilots, flying with Angolan airmen, took part in the attack carried out by MiG-21 and MiG-23 fighters which had scrambled from a Government air base at Menongue, 100 km west of Cuito Cuanavale.
