Colombia considers emergency measures

NZPA-Reuter Bogota The Colombian Government is preparing new anti-terrorist and law enforcement measures after drug barons murdered the country’s Attorney-Gen-eral, officials said yesterday. They said the measures would include stiffer penalties for convicted traffickers, but it was not immediately clear if the Government would revive an extradition treaty with the United States which was ruled unconstitutional by Colombia’s Supreme Court last year. Ruthless cocaine czars, who asserted responsibility for the murder of the Attorney-General, Carlos Mauro Hoyos, yesterday, have “declared war” on all Colombians who support their extradition for trial to the United States. In the last three years the traffickers have been blamed for the deaths of more than 50 judges. A Justice Minister, journalists, including the director of Bogota’s prestigious “El Espectador” newspaper, are among other victims. President Virgilio Barco met his Ministers in an emergency Cabinet meeting yesterday to draft the new crimefighting measures.
