Tolls on Tauranga bridge

PA Tauranga The Tauranga City Council has set a fee of $1 each way for vehicles crossing the new Tauranga Harbour bridge. The bridge committee’s chairman, Mr Nobby Clarke, said that the fees were based on “conservative” estimates of 71,000 cars a day using the bridge. The City Treasurer, Mr Allan Griffin, said the committee would not know if the toll was adequate to cover costs until the bridge was being used. Pedestrians and bicycles will use the bridge free of charge. Motor cycles will pay 50c each way, cars with caravans $1.50 and light trucks $3. The bridge is due to be opened by the former Air New Zealand chief executive, Mr Bob Owens, on March 12.
