Record sales
Jaguar sold 46,621 of its cars last year, achieving a 14 per cent increase on its previous best of 40,971 in 1986. This record was achieved in the first full sales year of the new XJ6 saloon range which played a part in enabling the Coventry company to increase its British sales by more than 45 per cent to 11,102 cars, the highest annual figure for nearly 10 years. Total European sales of 6550 were 51 per cent better than the 1986 figures, while sales in Germany, Europe’s largest luxury car market, reached 2156, and were more than 16 per cent
up on the previous year. Supply shortages, following the late 1986 launch date, held the United States sales figure to 22,919, in spite of 2848 cars sold in December, the second highest monthly total for that market. The 5880 XJS sporting cars sold in the United States during 1987 was a record 10 per cent rise over the previous best. “We can look forward to further sales growth during 1988, as our production increases and our model range is extended,” forecasts Roger Putnam, Jaguar’s sales and marketing director. ,
