Colombian Attorney-Gen. murdered
NZPA-Reuter Bogota Colombia’s Attorney-General was found dead on Monday afternoon, eight hours after being kidnapped apparently by drug traffickers fighting extradition to the United States.
The bullet-riddled corpse of Carlos Mauro Hoyos, handcuffed and blindfolded, was discovered on a farm near the spot where he was ambushed earlier in the day on his way to the airport in Medellin, the Acting Attorney-General, Ignacio Arboleda, told reporters. About the same time, a leading politician, Andres Pastrana, kidnapped eight days ago, recovered his freedom when police surrounded the farm where he was held in the mountain village of El Retiro, about 32km south of Medellin.
trana, a candidate for mayor of Bogota, the Colombian capital, told reporters his captors, none of whom were arrested, had told him about plans to kidnap Mr Hoyos. In a communique made public on Sunday setting out conditions for Mr Pastrana’s release, the kidnappers declared “total war” against Colombians who support the extradition of Colombian citizens to the United States. Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city, is headquarters of the country’s most powerful drug barons, believed responsible for some 70 per cent of the cocaine that enters the United States.
