Space goal
NZPA-Reuter Washington Proclaiming the goal of assuring a “highway to space,” President Reagan said yesterday that he would soon announce a major Commercial Space Initiative to boost the role of the private sector.
“By taking advantage of the private sector’s innovative excellence, we can maintain and extend America’s leadership in space,” he said. Mr Reagan said he would ask Congress to spend SUSI billion in 1989 and to earmark another SUS6.I billion over three years to maintain the commitment to a permanently manned space station. Another SUSIOO million would be spent in 1989 on the U.S. space agency’s Project Pathfinder, which is aimed at developing technologies in support of the Administration’s longterm goal of exploring the solar system.
