North-west winds sent temperatures soaring in North Canterbury forests yesterday sending the fire risk in the Balmoral and Eyrewell Forests to the extreme.
Personnel, apart from fire-watchers, were taken out of both forests to decrease the risk of a fire breaking out. The Hanmer Springs and Ashley Forests were considered high fire risks. The fire protection
officer for Timberlands Canterbury, Mr .Dennis Powell, said that if anyone saw smoke in any of the forests they should report it immediately to the forest headquarters or the local fire brigade.
He said often if smoke was not detected for some time the consequences were disastrous.
He warned people to stay away from the forests while the conditions were so dangerous.
