Preservation popular
The Government should intervene in the demolition of old buildings, a poll commissioned by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust shows.
The poll also shows local government should be more deeply involved in preserving historic buildings. The Heylen Research poll shows that 58 per cent of those surveyed thought the Government should intervene in the demolition of historic places. Seventy-five per cent said city and county councils should give more support to preserving buildings. The poll surveyed 1000 adult New Zealanders randomly selected and 61 per cent said “too many important old buildings are being pulled down.”
