Wind a problem for fire-fighters
A fire in the Rangiora District Council rubbish dump yesterday took Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade and district council staff 2>A hours to control.
The fire broke out about 1.30 p.m. and it was thought the strong northwest wind could spread it to the banks of the Ashley
River. The chief fire officer, Mr Don Hassall, said that thick black smoke had been caused by old tyres and rubber that had been dumped. The brigade had managed to contain the flames and council staff had remained at the scene after the brigade left at 4 p.m.
