Poultry plant to close

PA Nelson More than 20 people will lose their jobs and five poultry farmers their livelihoods because of General Foods’ decision to close its Nelson plant. Fifteen of the jobs are at the Tendabird poultry plant at Waitaki International’s Stoke freezing works, and the others are full and part-time employees of the poultry farmers.

The plant will close on March 31. The staff and farmers were told of the move at a meeting on Thursday. Tendabird Poultry’s manager, Mr Gordon Fitzgerald, said the closing was because of the difficult trading conditions coupled with cost increase which meant high running costs.

Four part-time workers at the plant will also lose their jobs. Redundancy packages will be offered to employees, as well as help in finding work. General Foods through Tegel Poultry has owned the company since September, 1985, when it was bought from the estate of Mr Murray Berkett.
