Value of crafts

Sir, —Congratulations to Mr Howard Masters, pictured on January 6 with his beautiful fine embroidery. How sad that he felt obliged to rubbjsh invitations to join the Embroiderers’ Guild as he "didn’t see myself in a group full of women.” Craft is nonsexist, whether in wood, wool or embroidery and, as Mr Masters illustrates, is a life-time skill and pleasure. The great pity is that, with the heavy emphasis on competitive sport as recreation, so little value is accorded to crafts and their allied skills — for men and women. — Yours, etc.,

D. CRAMPTON. January 18, 1988.
