Canty scores easy win

Canterbury had little more than a warm-up in its first game, against Wellington, in the Hansells Cup national XI women’s cricket tournament in North Shore yesterday. Wellington, batting first, was dismissed for 73 runs by Canterbury. The only impressive performance from Wellington’s batting line-up came from former Canterbury player, Sandra Bednarek who scored 23 before being stumped. Apart from Wellington’s two other top batswomen,

S. Hall and D. Bray, all its scores were below seven runs. Canterbury restricted its extras to seven with two byes and five wides. Coming into bat with an easy task, Canterbury batted professionally and reached the 74 runs needed with the loss of only two wickets. Ann McKenna was the mainstay once again for Canterbury scoring 34 not out and combined well with Kirsty Bond with 18 not out.

Instead of aimihg just for the win Canterbury was concentrating more on giving its top batswomen a chance to get used to the slower pitches in North Shore. Canterbury’s two wickets lost were Nicki Turner, run out for 15, and Debbie Forde, caught for two. Canterbury plays Central Districts today. Other results: Auckland 130/7 beat Southern Districts 129. North Shore 144/3 beat Central Districts 141.
