Toomey dominates motor-cycle meet

PA Wanganui Wellington’s Bob Toomey is $4550 richer after completely dominating the second day of the Wanganui international motor-cycle meeting on the Cemetery Circuit yesterday. Toomey, on his Suzuki machines, continued his form of Saturday and finished yesterday with nine wins from as many starts. He took all four legs of the Formula One series, scored three wins in the senior production class, .and both events in the Suzuki Masters.

As was the case on Saturday, his main opposition came from fellow Wellingtonian, Robert Holden (Ducati Pantah) who had to be content with four second placings in the Formula One racing. Although he pressed hard at times, Holden was not able to upset the winning streak by Toomey who goes to the final meeting in the Taubmans-Suzuki-Shell series at Rua-

puna next week-end with six straight wins in the glamour class. Defending champion, Richard Scott (Wanganui), worked hard on his Honda overnight and improved on Saturday’s results with two third placings, but he could not match the power of either Toomey or Holden. Toomey also dominated the senior production and Suzuki Masters classes with Manawatu’s Jason McEwan, also on a Suzuki, finishing runner-up in each race. Australian David Garrard (Yamaha) leads the Formula Two after placing 2-4-1 in three races at the week-end. Fellow Yamaha riders, Tony Maxwell (Hutt Valley), Mike Webb (Hamilton) and Aaron Slight (Wairarapa) also scored wins in the class at the week-end. It was a similar story in Formula Three with Michael McCutcheon (Kawasaki-Otago), Sean Walsh (Anderson 500 —

Auckland) and Tony McMurdo (Suzuki — Hutt Valley) all recording wins. Walsh leads the series.

Taranaki’s Dave Martin (Honda) continued his domination in the junior production racing while Slight was unbeatable in the 250 cc production series and Hutt Valley’s Tony Sampson (Yamaha) picked up four straight wins in the clubman’s races.

Some of the best weekend action came in the sidecars with series’ leaders Andy Kippen and Rachel McQueen (Kawasaki — Wellington) and the Bulls’ pair of Dave Beresford and Vince Steur (Home Built 1100) each scoring wins on the second day, ahead of first day champions Dick Leppard and Jim Goodin (Suzuki-Welling-ton).

More than 10,000 spectators watched the two days of racing and there were no serious injuries.
