Shriver favoured to win

NZPA-AAP Brisbane Pam Shriver has a tradition to uphold in the Ariadne Women’s Tennis Classic starting at Milton today. The 25-year-old American has made the final of the tournament four of the past five years, winning in 1983. Shriver, who heads the 14 seeded players for the

tournament, is fourth in world rankings after one of her best years in which she reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and twice beat Chris Evert. The winner of nearly sAust3 million (SNZ3.3 million) since turning professional in 1979, the right-handed Shriver’s first match at Milton will be against the winner of

the first round clash between Julie Richardson and Ronni Reis. She has been drawn to meet New South Wales’ Dianne Balestrat in the quarter-finals. The tournament has been bypassed by most of the world’s top seeds while Hana Mandlikova has decided to play in the doubles rather than defend her singles title.

Mandlikova, the world’s No. 5, who gains her Australian citizenship on Friday, has recovered from a groin injury during a sixweek rest since her last tournament at Madison Square Gardens in New York. “I felt a bit pressured so I thought I would just go for the doubles,” she said.
