Canty juniors triumph
PA Dunedin Otago, Canterbury and Northern Districts were winners in the first round of matches in the Telecom under-18 cricket tournament played yesterday. Scoring was slow in all matches, with bowlers generally dominating the batsmen. The Canterbury paceman Ciaran Hartley and off-spinner David Mills each took four wickets as Central Districts tumbled to 98 all out. Positive batting by Chris Harris, 55, and Robbie Frear, 46, gave Canterbury a comfortable win. John Herbert made a well-combined 54 for Wellington, who reached 169 for 9. Northern Districts batted steadily at the top of the order and captain Chris Cairns chimed in with 45, to help reach the target with six overs to spare. Scores: Otago 156/6 (S. Brown 56, L. Breen 40, K. Lines 21, J. Mears 3/13, M. Clegg 2/17) beat Auckland 155 (A. Smith 29, B. Peacock 23, M. Clegg 23, J. Mears 21, W. Heads, 6/ 62, G. Shaw 3/37). Canterbury 157/6 (C. Hamiss, R. Frew 46, S McHardy 2/16) beat Central Districts 98 (P. Lethbridge 37, C. Hartley 4/21, D. Mills 4/28). Northern Districts 173/ 6 (C. Cairns 45, M. Bailey 29, G. Littlejohn 27, G. Manners 21 no, B. Oxenham 21, S. Hotter 3/31, G. Wilkinson 2/31) beat Wellington 169/9 (J. Herbert 54, C. Dingle 26, J. Pope 3/38, C. Cairns 2/31, N. Martin 2/56).
