Canty juniors triumph

PA Dunedin Otago, Canterbury and Northern Districts were winners in the first round of matches in the Telecom under-18 cricket tournament played yesterday. Scoring was slow in all matches, with bowlers generally dominating the batsmen. The Canterbury paceman Ciaran Hartley and off-spinner David Mills each took four wickets as Central Districts tumbled to 98 all out. Positive batting by Chris Harris, 55, and Robbie Frear, 46, gave Canterbury a comfortable win. John Herbert made a well-combined 54 for Wellington, who reached 169 for 9. Northern Districts batted steadily at the top of the order and captain Chris Cairns chimed in with 45, to help reach the target with six overs to spare. Scores: Otago 156/6 (S. Brown 56, L.
