Hagley carparks

Sir,—The Christchurch City Council seems to believe it has a heaven-imposed duty to satisfy a God-given right of citizens to park their cars wherever they choose to. But for concentrations of cars there is a saturation point beyond which is ugliness, and the sacrifice of other amenities and uses for the land taken over. When the carpark in North Hagley Park was first mooted, objectors were assured it was only to give frail people and families easy access to the gardens, and would be unobtrusive. Just look at how it has grown, for sports people and others. Now we have proposals (November 26) for a whole bunch of additional carparks within or beside Hagley park. It is time the council put its energies into pursuing its nt her stated aims of encouraging people to use buses and bikes. — Yours, etc., -ELSIE LOCKE. November 28, 1987.
