Christmas gifts

Sir,—P. J. Armstrong (November 26) is right to question the suitability of violent or aggressive toys as Christmas presents. One of the most bizarre spectacles in city shops at this time of the year is the frequency with which one sees piles of monster dolls, model weapons and other violent toys grouped beneath slogans like “Peace and joy to all” or “Show them you love them this Christmas.” Another equally strange image is the picture of Santa Claus clambering down chimneys to fill stockings with mini-machine-guns and Rambo sets in a twisted ritual of the legend of Saint Nicholas. As the traditional Christmas beliefs decline we should really consider changing the words of some of our Christmas carols — “Silent Night, Violent Night” for example. This would better reflect the message we are giving to our children when we make these gifts. — Yours, etc.,

D. WYNN-WILLIAMS. November 26, 1987.
