Hunched man run over

PA Wellington A Porirua man was run over by a car as he stood “hunched” on a main road, the Wellington Coroner’s Court was told. The Coroner, Mr Ales Protheroe, found that Montgomery Simon Betham, aged 25, died of severe head injuries after being hit by a car in Warspite Avenue, Porirua, on July 10.

Sergeant Mary Ann Kelly said Mr Betham was seen 15 minutes before the accident “very intoxicated” in a car-park. “A witness saw him walk into a wall, then lurch around the park, causing a number of vehicles to stop or swerve to avoid hitting him,” she said. A man driving along Warspite Avenue saw Mr

Betham in a hunched-up position on the road in front of him. Despite braking heavily his car hit the man. Mr Betham suffered extensive head injuries and died at the scene. The Coroner said it was tragically clear that Mr Betham should not have ventured on the road. His blood-alcohol reading was 250 mg.
