Church farewell

The National Council of Churches marked the end of 46 years of existence at a farewell in Christchurch on Friday. Past and present committee members, staff, associates and friends gathered at College House to mark the winding-up of the council, which will hand over to its replacement body, the Conference of Churches in Aotearoa, in February. Appropriately, the final N.C.C. function was held in the city where its first meeting was held in 1941. Christchurch has traditionally been an ecumenical church stronghold, but

will retain its links in the new conference with the recent appointment of two Christchurch women to top administrative positions. The present head of N.C.C., Mrs Jocelyn Armstrong, and Sister Elizabeth Mackie, the present administrative secretary of the Christian World Service, N.C.C.’s aid and development arm, have been appointed to executive secretariat positions in the new church body. The secretariat members will take up their five-year appointments on February 1. ,
