Change of date for Breeders’ Stakes
By JEFF SCOTT Next year’s Standardbred Breeders’ Stakes, to be sponsored by National Bloodstock and worth $50,000 (up $lO,OOO on this year), has been changed to the second night of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s New Year meeting on January 4. “With Auckland repositioning their cup to December 30, we have
decided to give those open-class mares that contest the Auckland race a few days to get over it before racing in the mile here,” said Mr Tony Lye, the racing secretary for the Canterbury Park Club. The Group One fillies and mares mile at Addington also carries a free service to the Meadow Skipper stallion, Rashad (1:52.6).
Also in light of the changed date for the Auckland Cup, Canterbury Park have deleted their traditional CB-OC mobile 2600 m pacing race, replacing it with a $15,000 C 7 and faster handicap pace over 3200 m on New Year’s night. An additional $l3OO will be paid to any open-class pacer if successful from 30m behind on the first
night. The feature race on the first night will now be the $25,000 Canterbury Park Trotting Cup (up $5000) for open-class trotters, under invitation conditions (C 5 and 6 eligible). The distance remains unchanged at 3200 m. An $BOOO C4-C6 mobile 2600 m event for trotters will be run on the second night.
