Transport regulations

Sir,—With deregulation and the closing of post offices, public attention has been diverted from the increased regulation of the transport industry. New Zealand’s transport system is one of the most costly in the world. The new regulations that arbitrarily set limits will not necessarily decrease the road toll, but will make for a bureaucratic empire and make prosecuting easier. For example, a farmer could be

fined $2OOO and his licence confiscated for three months if he does not fill in his log book (could a dictatorship do better?). Like the present accident compensation legislation, this is something the country cannot afford, besides being another body blow to the South Island economy. I urge the Government to reconsider and rescind this hastily passed legislation. — Yours, etc., H. G. BRITTAN, Secretary, Dunsande! Federated Farmers. November 18,1987.
