Post offices

Sir,—The postal spokespeople have been talking as if all that the public ever needs post offices for is to “buy a stamp and post a letter.” Now they have begun to mention weighing of parcels, but what about assessment of the most appropriate rates; customs declarations; and registration or insurance for valuables? Will the friendly neighbourhood dairy have space, equipment, time and expertise for these matters, in amongst the yoghurt and onions, lollies and sausage rolls? I think not, and peak-time queues, as at Christmas-time, could well become intolerable. — Yours, etc., G. M. BARKER. November 17, 1987.
