Unemployment
Sir,—Recent reports on rising unemployment show that the Government is embarking on a new thrust in manipulating publicopinion. The Government is now trying to convince us that rising unemployment is due to necessary structural change. This is a clever use of half-truth. Labour M.P.S point to the increased number of jobs in tourism and finance.. But jobs as room-cleaners, waiters and k|t-cheg-hands are no substitute for the manufacturing jobs we are losing. Neither is tourism reliable enoqgh to be an important part of'Mta advanced econ-
omy. There is only limited scope In substituting jobs in the financial sector for the jobs In the productive sector upon which they are based. We cannot all be paper-pushers. Structural change is necessary, but promoting that as the justification for rising unemployment is a deception. — Yours, etc.,
