Wandering stock

Sir,—With the approach of summer and feed drying out, wandering stock in the Moncks Spur area becomes a real problem. I would like to ask the Town Clerk if property owners are required to erect fences to keep sheep and goats out? — Yours, etc., G. BURGESS.

September 1, 1987. [The Town Clerk, Mr J. A. Gray, replies: “The matter of the fencing of property between adjoining occupiers is < civil matter under the, provisions of the Fencing Act, 1979, and a local authority has no power under that act, except as a property owner in its own right. The council may require the owner or occupier of any land not separated from a road by a sufficient fence to enclose that land by a fence if it is considered necessary for the purposes of public safety or convenience. Any stock trespassing on to land may be seized by the occupier of that land and delivered to a pound, or at his or her request, by a stock ranger. The council has a stock ranger available'by contacting ph. 598336.”] .
