New centre first built for purpose in New Zealand — better service results
As the first purposebuilt centre in New Zealand, the Canterbury Building Centre offers a level of service and accessibility not known before in this sector. The 20,000 sq ft building will have over 100
major supplies and in excess of 200 exhibitors when fully completed. It has a conference facility with kitchen which can be used for cooking and microwave demonstrations. This area can be closed off by a sliding
door and the area used exclusively for a conference, special course or other demonstrations. The Christchurch centre is one of three in New Zealand with others in Auckland and Hamilton.
The move to Riccarton has been caused by the changing face of business in the dty centre. Whereas the old centre was once surrounded by merchants, warehouses, and traders, in recent
years these people have moved away to the suburbs. “We are really back where we belong,” said the general manager of the centre, Mr Bill Harrison.
“Here at Riccarton we are amongst building related people with timber, electrical and hardware outlets in close proximity,” he said. Ease of access is one of the great strengths of the new location. There are 40 car parks which give customers easy access at all, hours while exhibitors will also find it simple to service their displays.
One area where the new centre is putting added emphasis is in outdoor living. It has capitalised on a six-metre wide strip along the south east boundary which separates the industrial and residential zones and has turned this into an area to display paving stones and all types of outdoor furniture and accessories.
Entry for customers is totally free with no charge for brochures. There is a charge for some home-handyman publications. "It may seem strange that “we do not charge when many exhibitions held in the city for two and three days actually have a charge and offer exactly what we are doing,” he . said.
