Kitchen design courses prove popular with manufacturers’ staff in kitchen industry

Many kitchen manufacturers throughout New Zealand now offer a design service. Recruiting sales staff in some areas can prove to be difficult as usually the sales person doubles as the designer, and to find someone with experience in both fields can be quite a task. With strong competition in the kitchen industry, companies need to improve their product and service in order to com-

pete. Part of this service is good design. There is available through the N.K.B.A. National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (New Zealand, Ltd), a kitchen design course. The society of Certified Kitchen Designers was established in New Zealand in 1983. The American Society was founded in 1968. Membership is exclusive to holders of the C.K.D. qualification.

The C.K.D. (Certified Kitchen Designer) course is a correspondence course made up of four modules. Module I.— Design principles and practices. Module 2.— Drawing techniques and standards. Module 3 — Building materials, mechanical systems, construction and estimating. Module 4.— Kitchen planning principles, equipment and appliances. The only time limitation is that at least one

module a year is to be completed. There are other requirements for certification as a C.K.D. and for anyone wanting further information please contact N.K.8.A., P.O. Box 170, Hamilton. A point worth mentioning here is that to encourage better kitchen design the N.K.8.A., in conjunction with New Zealand Trends, Ltd, sponsor the Kitchen Design Awards.

The winner of the Kitchen Designer of the Year Award for 1986-87 received a free trip to the U.S.A. and $lOOO in spending money, plus a Trends Designer of the Year Trophy. Most of the top entries were featured in the 1987 Kitchen Trends book. A final word would be, if buying a new kitchen, consult a reputable firm that is a member of the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association.
