Mr Robin Adair

Mr Robin Adair, who died last week, was for many years a prominent Canterbury thoroughbred breeder and was one of the guiding forces towards the establishment of the annual South Island sale, which will have its twentieth renewal next week.

In partnership with his wife, Isobel, Mr Adair conducted the Inglewood Stud at Kaiapoi as successor to the late Mr Ken Austin, and as forerunner for Mr Austin’s grandson, Mr Nick Wigley. At the Trentham sales in 1963 Mr and Mrs Adair were represented,

amongst others, by a My Pal—Prado colt which was purchased for 425 guineas and became a top two-year-old of his year. This was Rio, whose five wins from eight starts at two years included the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Mr Adair was president of the Canterbury-West Coast branch of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association when the annual South Island sale was initiated in 1967.

He also gave long service as an office-bearer to the Amberley Racing Club.
