Breeders’ Plate boasts talented field at Ruakaka today

Special correspondent Auckland The meeting of Georgie Porgie and Mr Classic, each going for his third win on end, will help bring widespread attention to the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate at the Whangarei Racing Club’s meeting at Ruakaka today. The two horses, Georgie Porgie from Te Horo, near Levin, and Mr Classic, from Takanini, are among several in the 1200 m race which look real up-and-comers. Sheena Belle, Rhythmic Dancer and Teasing, all with two wins to their credit, are other prospects and Escalation, successsful last time at Ellerslie, adds further strength to the field. Georgie Porgie and Mr Classic were late beginning their racing, within a week of each other in April, at Trentham (Georgie Porgie) and Te Awamutu (Mr Classic). Neither did much to gain attention, Georgie Porgie equal fourth, and Mr Classic, sixth. But Georgie Porgie, meanwhile, in five attempts, finished third, first, fifth, first and first, and Mr Classic has claimed his two wins in just as many sta rte Georgie Porgie had his latest success

at Trentham on July 4, under 58kg and in front all through the 1200 m. That was with heavy footing but he had been no less impressive the previous time when in front all the way on a much firmer track, at Hastings. He is evidently very quick and a good, resolute finisher. Mr Classic is raced by Mr Bob Ross, of Takanini, and in the Verner stable, a combination which had such success with Prince Majestic, a fine galloper of the same Noble Bijou breed. If Mr Classic manages something like the achievements of Prince Majestic he will be doing very well indeed. A chestnut, whereas the other horse is bay, he certainly shows high promise.

On reasonably good ground, at Ruakaka on May 22, he won very clearly and he had to be pretty game next time, when getting home narrowly over 1200 m in the deep going of the Great Northern meeting.

Winter going at Ruakaka is invariably drier than anywhere else and the 1200 m of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate could be run quickly. This should suit Sheena Bella, a Te Rapa filly which won two of her last three races, out in front all the way.
