Red Sovereign seeking change of Brabazon luck tomorrow

By J. J. BOYLE An inquiry room decision gave Red Sovereign victory in the Christchurch Hunt’s Ashley Meats Brabazon Handicap 12 months ago, but when the matter went to an appeal the Washdyke gelding lost the race to Black Arrow, which had beaten him by a nose.

The two horses involved in that ongoing saga will meet again in the Christchurch Hunt’s feature flat race and first leg of the T.A.B. double at Riccarton tomorrow.

In the meantime Black Arrow has won once, and Red Sovereign has been scoreless in that regard, but has assembled a form line of minor placings to make him a well-regarded lightweight. Red Sovereign retains the confidence of the successful Riccarton jockey, Grant Davison, after a second (promoted from third), a third, and two fourths at his last four starts.

His promotion to second, behind Kallista, followed the relegation of Gums a Calling from first over 1600 m at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting last Saturday. Gums a Calling is in the line-up against Red Sovereign again tomorrow and he has heavy track form at the distance to compel attention. He won the 1400 m Camla Handicap in style at the Christchurch Hunt meeting a year ago, and his record in the meantime includes another win at that distance at Riccarton at Easter.

Seve is another emerging talent in the lower half of the handicap. He found 1200 m too short for him when third on his home track at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting but distinguished himself over more ground in capturing a double at Riverton at Easter and in running Narrative to half a length at Wingatui at Queen’s Birthday week-end. Tim’s Magic adds to the strength of the lower echelon in the handicap and it is not surprising to find the connections of the top weight, Tirana, seeking weight relief with the engagement of the apprentice, Jackie Jamieson. Tirana has campaigned successfully in the Central Districts for the North Canterbury stable of John Parsons this year. His performances in that time include two wins at Awapuni, the most recent of

them over 1400 m on June 6. The Wingatui-trained Courier Flight landed the Great Autumn on his Easter raid on Riccarton, and returned there for a fourth over 1800 m last month.

He was promoted to third after running fourth in the Brabazon last year, but his chances of improving his record in the race might have been stronger if Riccarton could offer firmer footing tomorrow. Hills Peak and No Techie are other competent Wingatui-trained performers at the Brabazon distance and the Goretrained Heidyby assembled a solid record in her home province before her unplaced run over 1200 m at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting. The Mean Machine’s fading fourth against Heidyby and company last week left the impression that he would have needed better footing in his bid for a hat-trick of wins.

Great Zeal did enough in winning at Riccarton last time out to make fair claim to favouritism for the Camla Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

A strong Adios II gelding from the Thistoll stable, Great Zeal trotted up by over three lengths over 1600 m at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on June 27.

Huianui, another winner on that programme at the same distance, will be in the line-up against Great Zeal tomorrow. But this Beaufort Sea gelding from South Canterbury was a dead-heating first in his race and took slightly longer to do so. Corrie Doone will be an interesting fresh runner. He was sidelined by injury after showing high promise in his three-year-old racing last season and if all goes smoothly for him this time up he could be one of the brighter staying prospects for Riccarton in the new season. Valley of Wales has something of a talent in the heavy stuff and Kyolic could be the best below him in the weights.
