Under-18 badminton teams show depth
The depth of Canterbury under age badminton showed when two of its under-18 teams finished first and third in the Interprovincial Zone tournament in Oamaru and Nelson. Canterbury No 1, easily beat South Canterbury, 16-0, and North Otago, 15-1, but were faced with a bigger challenge when they met old rivals and contenders for the prestigious Woolworths Cup, Southland. Canterbury trailed, 5-3, . after eight singles and with the withdrawal of Sarah Mitchell, its No. 2 girl, it had a tough assignment. But Canterbury rallied and
dominated the doubles and mixed doubles to finally win,. 9-7. Canterbury No. 2 emerged from Nelson as the winners of the zone one tie, and were placed third over-all. Canterbury showed its strength by beating Marlborough, 15-1, Nelson, 12-4, and West Coast, 12-4. These provinces have strong top players but were unable to match the depth of the Canterbury players. The New Zealand teams title will be fought in Lower Hutt in August between Canterbury No. 1 and three North Island teams.
