‘Erosion risk high if cable laid’
A high risk of erosion will be evident if the plans to lay an electrical cable up to the Mount Hutt ski-field go ahead, the North Canterbury Catchment Board heard yesterday. The proposed project is to dig a thin trench from the floor of the mountain up to the ski-field and lay an electric cable in it. “The severe climate, the steep slopes, and the probable soil disturbance caused by machineiy mean that erosion is likely to be a problem,” said the board’s regional soil and water conservator, Mr Don Wethey.
"We are concerned about the difficulties of re-establishing a vegetative cover after the work has been done in some parts,” he said.
The board was asked for its advice on the matter by the Ashburton Electric Power Board which will lay the cable. “We are trying to deal with the problem before it arises and we hope the power board may reconsider its plans,” said Mr Wethey.
If the cable was laid along the proposed route,' a . lot of money would have to be spent in restoring vegetative cover to prevent erosion, he said.
