Mount Herbert may pay catchment rates
Mount Herbert County ratepayers will pay rates to the North Canterbury Catchment Board next year, if proposed legislation changes go ahead. Under a new bill, the county will be included in the board’s district for the purpose of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Con-
trol Act, 1941. “We will be responsible for providing total catchment services in Mount
Herbert County,” said the board’s chief executive, Mr Ray Wood. “This means county ratepayers will pay us rates.” Mount Herbert is one of the few remaining areas in New Zealand not to receive total catchment board services. This has
been a matter of choice. It has received regional water board services since 1970.
