Mixed Aust. ends firm

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed firm in mixed trading yesterday, with selected buying in industrial stocks leading the market up. Brokers said that heavy options-related trade was the highlight of the day. The market opened about steady as a slight fall in gold prices overnight led to falls in the mining sector, which partially offset support for industrial issues. National turnover was a high 165 million shares worth sAust3o2 million, and falls

outnumbered rises six to five. Western Mining finished a strong week with the highest turnover of shares for the day. Nearly 11 million shares worth $45 million exchanged, and the stock jumped 18c to 594. CRA also traded heavily, but dropped 26c to 824. Strong interest in Elders IXL amid speculation that it would sell its BHP holding pushed it up 15c to 475. CSR was another to trade heavily, losing 3c to 402 on turnover of 6.5 million shares, and the Bell Group dropped 10c to 770 on trade of 2.5 million.
