Christchurch runners loom large

The Christchurch' Athletic men’s A team could have an

upset win in the Roche Hagley relays in Christchurch tomorrow. New Brighton has tended to dominate the men’s relay in recent years but this year a question mark hangs over the club’s ‘entry with Peter Renner and Tom Birnie listed

to run for the A team but also entered in the Fletcher

marathon at Rotorua. The University of Canterbury Cross Country Club was second in the men’s section last year and has maintained a high profile most years, but it has suffered the shock loss of two of its top runners, Phil Clode and Elliot Drayton,

while its ace card, Dave Burridge, is unavailable.

Christchurch, third last year, has gained John Gamblin from the Ashburton club and that could tip the balance in its favour. The New Brighton women’s team should turn the tables on University this year.
